Greening the Conference

The Greening the Heartland 2009 Conference Special Task Committee is committed to conducting an environmentally responsible conference in Detroit. To provide the focus needed for this effort, a Greening Subcommittee has been formed.

Top 10 GREEN PRACTICES FOR ATTENDEES:

  • Share a ride! Arrange a car pool with others in your area, especially if you’re planning a long distance drive.

  • Reuse! Use the water container provided at the conference and bring a reusable coffee cup to use at “on the go” establishments.

  • Recycle! Minimize what you throw away — use provided recycling bins in your hotel and at Cobo Center.

  • Conserve energy and water during your hotel stay. Minimize water use and turn off lights or any appliances before you leave.

  • Use the People Mover elevated rail system for getting around downtown Detroit. A free pass will be provided with your Marriott hotel reservation, otherwise it’s only 50 cents per ride!

  • Enjoy the Detroit Riverwalk! It's only a six minute walk from the Marriott Hotel to Cobo Center.

  • Take notes and print your conference registration confirmation, directions, etc. on both sides of the paper.

  • If flying, consider purchasing a carbon offset. For example, www.terrapass.com

  • You can also “Green your Marriott Hotel stay” for $10.00. Marriott has committed $2 million to help protect the Juma rainforest reserve in the State of Amazonas, Brazil. A ten dollar minimum contribution will offset the carbon for your next ten room nights at Marriott hotels and is tax deductible for U.S. taxpayers. • Participate in our GTH 2009 Legacy tree planting projects in Detroit. Check for upcoming opportunities on our website — www.greeningtheheartland.org

 VOLUNTEER FOR THE “LEGACY PROJECT”

The Greening of Heartland Conference calls for volunteers and participants to engage in a carbon offset “Legacy Project” that will implement a series of “green” initiatives over a period of time before, during and after the conference. All conference attendees are encouraged to participate in the planning and execution of some aspects of the “Legacy Project.” The project is intended to develop an array of landscape initiatives that provide the opportunity to learn about the range of LEED products while improving needs within our local communities. Check back here for more information as projects are developed and posted.
